What is an ORDIT approved trainer?

ORDIT is the Official Register of Driving Instructor Training. An ORDIT approved trainer will be tested on his ability to give good sound training of the highest standard and his training facilities will also be checked for suitability.

This process is repeated every two years to ensure that the training given continues to meet these high standards.


What is a DSA approved trainer?

DSA is the Driving Standards Agency. They are responsible for licensing all UK driving instructors. You would not become a DSA approved trainer, but a DSA approved Driving Instructor.


How do you become a DSA approved Driving Instructor?

To become a DSA approved Driving Instructor you will need to be entered onto the DSA register and then pass all three parts of the qualifying exam. Part 1 is theory based, part 2 is a test of driving ability and part 3 is a test of instructional ability.


How do you become an ORDIT approved driving instructor?

You would not become an ORDIT approved instructor, as ORDIT is only for instructor TRAINERS


What do I need for a new career as a driving instructor?

You will need to have held a full unrestricted UK driving licence for a minimum of three and a half years and that licence must have no more than five penalty points.

You will also be required to undergo a CRB check (check for criminal records) and will need to apply to be entered onto the DSA Register. All of the paperwork required for this can be found in the DSA starter pack, available from DITA on request.


As a new job what can I expect to earn as a driving instructor?

Realistically, you will be earning around £22.00 per hour. An average working week of 35 hours means you will earn around £770.00 per week.

After taking out running expenses and franchise fees you will be taking in the regeon of £400.00 - £450.00 per week. Obviously, this figure will increase if you worked more hours.


How long is driving instructor training?

Your training can be fitted in around your current commitments and will usually take around 6 to 9 months, depending on how much time you have to commit to it.


As an approved driving instructor where can I get information from?

As an ADI you can get information from the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) web site. There are also local associations for driving instructors, the largest of which being the DIA (Driving Instructors Association)
