Training Car Banned for Driving Instructors
Apr 03 2008
The VW Beetle Convertible has been banned for use on driving tests, therefore rendering it useless as a training car.
A risk assessment was conducted by Standards and Regulation and the TUS and found the examiner’s view of the rear offside was severely restricted. The assessment also found that when the vehicle is turning left onto major roads, or when changing lanes, the examiner cannot see approaching traffic, posing a serious risk.
This is the latest in a line of models deemed unfit for use on Driving Tests and gives a clear message to those instructors looking to change their car or even new ADIs/PDIs looking for a first car; check with the DSA that the model you are intending to use is fit for purpose.
There is a concise list of Training Cars in The Driving Instructor magazine and Driving magazine, both publications of the Driving Instructors Association, which give all the information on the latest models and their suitability for training. These publications are free to all Driving Instructors Association members.
