Virtual Driving Instructors in Staffordshire
May 10 2008
Staffordshire Council have taken the unusual step of offering 50 newly qualified young drivers the opportunity of having an electronic virtual driving instructor fitted to their cars, at no cost to them.
Aimed at improving safety among teenage drivers, the ‘Green Road Technologies’ Safety Centres have sensors, which detect manoeuvres such as speed, braking, accelerating, swerving and lane changing. The data is then transferred into an in-car safety display with green, yellow and red lights and the driver is alerted with a short tone and a red light when dangerous driving is detected.
To make the system even more effective, the data is then recorded and can be accessed by the driver (and their parents), by logging on to a web site to receive feedback, highlighting areas where improvements can be made.
At last a system that works in harmony with the training of the driving instructor and not attempting to substitute it.
